Entei

Go Fest Dortmund met their goal, so it looks like we’ll be graced with shiny Entei Raid day! Entei is a very popular Pokemon. Earning a lot of fans from the 3rd Pokemon Movie, where it was the fearsome father figure of a empowered little girl. Entei is an extremely useful and powerful fire type (although there are strong arguments it is not the best), and with it’s new shiny, Entei Raid Day will be one you don’t want to miss!

Release Period: July 14th 4-7 pm (local time)

Pokemon Raid Day Info

Entei will be featured for 3 hours during  July 14th! Assuming Niantic follows their patterns from the previous raid days:

All gyms will activate with a Tier 5 Entei Raid for the full 3 hours from 4-7 PM local Time.

You will get 5 free raid passes, but you only get them consecutively once the previous one is used, so you need to do the 5 raids in that time block.

Niantic appears to have settled on a 10% shiny rate for these events, but that can always change without warning.

Entei in the Meta

Fire SpinOverheat/Flamethrower (Raids)

In terms of Fire-Type damage, Entei is sitting around #3, behind both  Moltres (Fire Spin/Overheat) and community day Blaziken (Fire Spin/Blast Burn).

Prior to that, Entei was sitting as a tankier alternative to Moltres, with advantage in situations where Moltres’ Flying sub-typing harmed it. The most important one being Ice Pokemon with Ice Attacks.

Entei also has another major advantage, which is the moveset Flamethrower. While it has less raw power, being a 2 bar move allows it to be slightly more consistent and able to avoid wasting energy. That said, none of that means anything to Blast Burn Blaziken. Fighting Duel Typing doesn’t have any major downsides-and a couple upsides. Including an extra resistance to Bug and negating weakness to Rock.

Entei does have higher theoretical TDO than both of them, but he doesn’t have any clear niche where he is the #1 choice. That all said, the performance drop between him and them is rather marginal in most situations, and would only come up for more hardcore players.

Gym Attacking

Entei has favorable matchups against Metagross, Tangrowth, and Melmetal. If you choose to have Iron Head as your fast move, he also does well against Togekiss. Entei’s Fairy resistance is his main advantage here (something Blaziken lacks) but overall even here he lags between the two Fire Chickens. Still, he does manage to make it into Pokebattlers Top 25 Gym Attackers.

Entei Weather Advice

Here is a list of Pokemon that can perform similar or better than the typical #1 option (in this case, Rampardos) with weather bonuses:

Pokemon Weather Fast Move Charge Move Estimator @ L35
Rampardos PARTLY_CLOUDY Smack Down Rock Slide 1.71
Kyogre RAINY Waterfall Hydro Pump 1.75
(Legacy) Feraligatr RAINY Waterfall Hydro Cannon 1.94
Gyarados RAINY Waterfall Hydro Pump 1.99
(Legacy) Tyranitar PARTLY_CLOUDY Smack Down Stone Edge 2.00
Rhyperior PARTLY_CLOUDY Smack Down Stone Edge 2.05
Rampardos NO_WEATHER Smack Down Rock Slide 2.05
Kyogre NO_WEATHER Waterfall Hydro Pump 2.11

Clear Weather is the hardest, with the best counter winning with 2.2 players. Partly Cloudy Weather is the easiest, with the best counter winning with 1.7 players.

Entei Movesets

  • Flamethrower- Multi-bar moveset hits frequently
  • Iron Head- Hit’s Rock types super effectively, water types however are just as resistant as ever.  Note, while Ground is super effective against Steel, it does not resist Steel moves.
  • Fire Blast- Single Bar charge move
  • Overheat- Single Bar, but hits even harder than Fire Blast

General Entei Counters

Entei takes 1.6x damage from Ground / Rock / Water .

Pure Water Types resist Fire and Steel.

Pure Rock Types resist Fire.

Pure Ground Types resist neither.

Entei can be beaten by 2 players in optimal weather, with max friendship and perfect level 40 counters or by 4 unfriended players using level 20 counters from this guide. When caught, Entei will be between 1900 and 1984 cp without a weather boost. In Sunny/Clear weather, Entei will be between 2375 and 2480 when caught.

Rampardos

Smack Down /

Rock Slide
Requires 3 players with level 35 Rampardos

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

Rampardos is a difficult to acquire Pokemon, being brand new and needs to be evolved . Craniodos was recently was featured in quests during the Earth Day Event however.

Kyogre

Waterfall /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Kyogre

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Kyogre is a phenomenal Water type, topping the charts in both Damage and Bulk. It is #1 in Rain of course, but also against Iron Head. This is due to Rock’s weakness to it and Water’s resistance to it!

Kyogre has only just left Raids recently, so there’s a good chance you had a chance to snag one. It is a legendary Pokemon though, and expensive to power up.

Feraligatr

Waterfall /

Hydro Cannon
Requires 3 players with level 35 Feraligatr

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Hydro Cannon Feraligatr is legacy, and can’t currently be caught/TM’d. It was a couple months ago so not too bad.

Tyranitar

Smack Down /

Stone Edge
Requires 3 players with level 35 Tyranitar

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Tyraintar has had quite an illustrious history as an accessible raid boss and even a community day! Also had some increased spawn recently.

That said, accessibility will be a bit tough if you are only starting now as Larvitars do not nest and are rare. Larvitar can be found in “Make 3 Excellent Throws in a Row” Quests, but you won’t be able to get the legacy move this way.

Gyarados

Waterfall /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Gyarados

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Magikarp can spawn from Glacial Lure Modules, and Catch 10 Pokemon quests. It is also currently a Tier 1 Raid Boss as of writing.  Gyarados has been available for years now, but has a hefty 400 candy cost to evolve.

Rhyperior

Smack Down /

Stone Edge
Requires 3 players with level 35 Rhyperior

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

A Sinnoh Evolution, Rhydons are a decently accessible Pokemon, and both has nests and has been featured in the recent earth day event. They also are boosted in 2 very common weathers so hopefully not too bad to get one even though it takes a lot of candy. It does require a Sinnoh stone however, which can be acquired at random from your first daily Trainer Battle.

Alternative Entei Counters

Palkia

Dragon Tail /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Palkia

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Palkia was released earlier this year, and it’s water type moveset is useful here. It’s typing also grants it double resistance to fire attacks, and normal resistance to Steel. It notably has the highest TDO against Entei overall, even coming ahead of Kyogre for non-Iron Head movesets! It mildly likes Windy weather.

Aerodactyl (New Moveset)

Rock Throw /

Rock Slide
Requires 3 players with level 35 Aerodactyl

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐☆☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

Aerodactyl has shot into this list by surprise just in the last couple days! Niantic has graced our air-borne friend with Rock Throw as a fast move! This allows it to be actually pretty competitive

Groudon

Mud Shot /

Earthquake
Requires 3 players with level 35 Groudon

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

While Garchomp might be the new hotness here, Groudon has come to be our standard for a phenomenal Ground Type. Due to Ground not having any resistances against Entei’s movesets however, he is a bit lower on the list. He still has a preference towards Iron Head and does a lot better in sunny weather though.

Groudon while being a legendary, is a very recent Tier 5 boss, and has been featured a couple times recently.

Omastar

Rock Throw /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Omastar

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐☆☆☆☆

Legacy Omastar was one of the very first Legacy’s, and is extremely rare. Omanyte can be in “Win a Level 3 or Higher Raid” Quests, but wont have the legacy moveset when evolved. It’s Water and Rock typing grant it the advantages of both, double resisting Fire and normal resisting Steel.

Garchomp

Mud Shot /

Earthquake
Requires 3 players with level 35 Garchomp

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐☆☆☆☆

Garchomp competes with Groudon as the best Ground Type, and here it packs a resistance to Fire that Groudon could only wish to have! He also delights in sunny weather. Garchomp is pretty hard to get your hands on however. She is a very new mon, with Pseudo-Legendary rarity in the wild with no nests. No research rewards or events either so far . On top of that they are a second stage Pokemon so if you have managed to get one without dumping a mountain of rare candies, congrats!

Floatzel

Waterfall /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Floatzel

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐☆☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Buizel have been a recent mainstay of Tier 1 Raids, and are an uncommon wild spawn, but show up decently frequently in rain. Floatzel does notably better in rainy weather.

Swampert

Water Gun /

Surf
Requires 3 players with level 35 Swampert

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Swampert is about to get it’s community day and jump far up this list in both DPS and accessibility, but until then here it sits. It only gains advantage from it’s water typing, resisting both Fire and Steel.

Golem – Alola

Rock Throw /

Stone Edge
Requires 3 players with level 35 Golem – Alola

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Alolan Geodudes have been a plague everywhere during the recent 3rd Anniversary event! There’s little excuse not to have a Golem. But if you are just joining, Alolan Geodude do spawn from Magnetic Lure Modules.

Vaporeon

Water Gun /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Vaporeon

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Eevee is available from Evolve a Pokemon Quests, and is in general a very common Pokemon. It also nests and you can even get a guaranteed shiny from the Jump Start Special Research that is currently running.

Blastoise

Water Gun /

Hydro Cannon
Requires 3 players with level 35 Blastoise

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Squirtle was featured in one of the first community days, with sunglasses even! So unless you were playing back then, or during the end of the year community day revisit event, you won’t be able to get one with Hydro Cannon.

Golem

Rock Throw /

Stone Edge
Requires 3 players with level 35 Golem

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐☆☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

While Golem has had it’s time in the light as the top Rock Type in Gen 1, it’s always lagged Rhydon in Ground, and now has half a dozen other blokes outclassing it.

Geodudes are now too much of a pain to acquire for most people and exist in research rewards as well. Hunt down a nest or play in partly cloudy will be enough for many to get Golem.

Geodude can be in “Make 5 Nice Throws” quests.

Salamence

Dragon Tail /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Salamence

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Dragon Typing grants it resistance to Fire.

Kabutops

Waterfall /

Stone Edge
Requires 3 players with level 35 Kabutops

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Kabuto can be found in “Win a Level 3 or Higher Raid” Quests.

Milotic

Waterfall /

Surf
Requires 3 players with level 35 Milotic

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

Feebas Spawn from Glacial Lure Modules.

Kingdra

Water Gun /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Kingdra

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Same typing as Palkia, gives it double resistance to Fire, in addition to normal resistance to Steel.

Empoleon

Waterfall /

Hydro Pump
Requires 3 players with level 35 Empoleon

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐☆☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Empoleon’s Steel typing here is a bit complicated. While normally great, here it negates it’s resistance to Fire, but it does give it a double resistance to Steel. Piplup spawn from Glacial Lure Modules, and is a nesting species.

Crawdaunt

Waterfall /

Bubble Beam
Requires 3 players with level 35 Crawdaunt

⚔️ Raw Damage: ⭐☆☆☆☆
🛡️ Survival/Bulk: ⭐☆☆☆☆
📉 Consistency: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
🌐 Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Crawdaunt is a pretty forgettable Pokemon, but if you have a high level one it is plenty usable. Their pre-evolve is a nesting species.

Closing Thoughts

Entei is back with a new look, and given how useful it is and it’s popularity, the shiny is going to be quite desirable. This Raid day will have something for everyone, and we’ll see if it proves to live up to the hype as Raikou did. Just be sure to come prepared with lots of Raid Passes!
